Let’s talk upcycling! The eco-friendly inspiration for those of us striving to be more “green.” Not only is it good for the planet, but it is fun and satisfying!
Where to start…
Starting a new project may be daunting, so let’s just focus on supplies right now. All you really need is scissors, a glue stick and paper. The paper I use comes from old magazines and outdated calendars.
That being said, keep an eye out at thrift stores and garage sales – they tend to have magazines for cheap, maybe even fifty cents or less! I find some real deals. Speaking of deals, check out eBay and Amazon for years-old calendars. The daily ones like those from Page-a-Day are my favorite! I use them for the base of my collages.
Additionally, you can upgrade from scissors to a craft knife and a rotary mat. My mini rotary mat is from Dollar Tree – only $1.25! Glue sticks are there as well. Making collages does not have to be an expensive hobby.
Finding your vision…
Next, now that you have your supplies, let’s talk about the creative process. Sometimes, this step seems overwhelming. Tackle that challenge!
First, I sift through my calendar pages and find several that would make interesting backgrounds. Scenes where I can perch something silly, or create a scene with the subject peeking out around objects etc.
Second, I flip through my magazines. You might even do this in your free time; cut out subjects that can be used in future projects and keep them in an envelope. That way, you are ready to go!
Third, get creative! Really try to challenge yourself and think outside the box. For example, I could have just put the lady in front of the flowers above, but adding wings to her tells a whole new story! Is she a fairy? I really like to create pieces that make someone think, something they could create a story around.
Just have fun…
Lastly, just have fun! The possibilities are endless. When you are finished, you can use them for greeting cards or frame them. What is great about this project is that you don’t have to be amazing at drawing or painting etc. (although incorporating these elements could be fun). Even so, without those skills, it still feels like you’re creating something amazing. And you are!

Excellent, beautiful and inspirational
